This throw typically starts with a downward 'twitch' on Tori's hands which causes Uke to react by rising slightly which is then 'assisted' by Tori causing Uke to float.  As this happens Tori turns into Uke and inserts his elbow under Uke's armpit and utilises this to lever Uke over his hip to the floor.

Key Throw

It is important to learn this throw properly as the key moves are present in almost all of the forward techniques. From the setting up of the opponent, to breaking the balance and then floating whereupon Tori moves into Uke and then completes the throw, each stage is critical in setting the scene for the next in a build up to an impressive technique.

The footwork of this throw is used in almost all hip and shoulder techniques and the hands are used in several other throws including Tai Otoshi and even O Uchi Gari and Ko Uchi Gari. Getting this throw right makes it much easier to progress with the others.
