This throw requires a strong 'float'.  It is therefore important to pull strongly upwards on your opponent as you advance to break his balance.  Full body contact is required up Tori's side so that as the sweeping leg lifts Uke upwards.  The hips should work as a pivot with the body coming down as the leg rises in order to try to maintain a straight line from the shoulder to the ankle of the lifting leg.  It is best if the toes are pointed and the leg is kept as straight as possible.  In Kata, the body grip is taken from the rear of Uke's body but this is not necessary as can be seen here.

Tom

Generates considerable 'lift' as he turns into this throw which means that he is able to float his opponent nicely to give a good solid throw. This has served him well in many a contest.

Tom uses this throw in combination with Tai Otoshi and also Tani Otoshi, the later where he turns in for the Harai but the opponent avoids his hip but leaving himself wide open for Tom to convert to Tani Otoshi.

Tom takes Silver at Senior Nationals
